Introduction
5G wireless connectivity promises superfast speeds, low latency, better reliability, and more. However, 5G network coverage is still incredibly thin outside of major metropolitan areas, and as a result prioritizing 5G connectivity over an available LTE network may actually result in a worse experience for you. Thankfully, Apple makes it easy to turn off using a 5G network on your iPhone so you can test that and see if the experience is better for you. You can find the list of steps to do this below, as well as my YouTube video linked above where I talk through the steps and show the associated images. Examples of all instructions in the steps can be seen in the YouTube video below.
Steps to Turn Off 5G on iPhone
Now let’s walk through the steps to turn off 5G on your iPhone.
- Launch the “Settings” app on your iPhone. You’ll land on the Settings screen.
- Tap “Cellular” in this menu. The Cellular screen is shown.
- Tap “Cellular Data Options.” You’ll see the Cellular Data Options screen.
- Tap “Voice and Data.” The Voice and Data screen is displayed. If you’re using 5G on your iPhone you’ll see a check mark next to either 5G On or 5G Auto.
- You can ensure 5G is turned off on your iPhone by tapping to place a check mark next to LTE. 5G will be disabled going forward.
Reasons to Consider Turning Off 5G on Your iPhone
1. Poor 5G Coverage or Connectivity
If you live in an area where 5G coverage is spotty or non-existent, you might want to turn off 5G on your iPhone. With 5G off, your device will automatically switch to 4G LTE, ensuring a more stable and reliable connection. If you’re experiencing frequent dropped calls or slow data speeds, this could be the reason why.
2. Battery Life Concerns
One of the biggest concerns about 5G is its effect on battery life. 5G requires more power to maintain a connection, which can quickly drain your battery. If you’re someone who is frequently on the go and don’t want to be tethered to a charger, you might want to consider turning off 5G on your iPhone.
3. Health Concerns
Despite evidence to the contrary, some people are concerned about the potential health effects of 5G. If you’re one of these people, turning off 5G on your iPhone can give you peace of mind. While 5G is still a new technology, and more research is needed, many experts believe it’s safe.
4. Cost of 5G Data Plans
5G data plans can be more expensive than 4G plans. If you’re looking to save money on your monthly bill, you might want to consider turning off 5G on your iPhone. With 5G off, you’ll still be able to enjoy fast data speeds, but you won’t have to pay the premium for 5G service.
5. Interference with Other Devices
5G operates on high-frequency bands, which can interfere with other devices or equipment that operate on the same frequency. If you’re experiencing interference with other devices, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or GPS, you might want to turn off 5G on your iPhone.
