How to Enable Hover Typing on iPhone or iPad

The Hover Typing feature from Apple for iPhone and iPad lets you see a larger version of the text you’re typing in a separate window, making it much easier to read and reducing eye strain. It’s especially beneficial for anyone who wants clearer visibility while typing, whether you have visual impairments, prefer larger text for comfort, or simply want to enhance your typing experience. The only catch is that this requires that you’re using an iPhone running at least iOS 18 or an iPad running at least iPadOS 18.

5 Reasons to Enable Hover Typing on iPhone or iPad

1. Improving Typing Accuracy

Enabling hover typing on your iPhone or iPad helps improve typing accuracy by reducing the chances of pressing the wrong key. With hover typing, the device registers which key you intend to press based on proximity, offering a more precise typing experience. This feature is especially useful for users who have larger fingers or struggle with touchscreen precision. It makes typing faster and more accurate, minimizing the frustration of constantly correcting typos. Hover typing also enhances the overall experience by ensuring that your text input is more fluid and error-free. The added precision helps you focus on what you’re typing rather than fixing mistakes.

2. Enhancing Accessibility for Users with Mobility Issues

Hover typing offers a significant advantage for individuals with mobility or dexterity challenges. Instead of requiring physical contact with the screen, it allows users to type by simply hovering their finger or stylus over the keys. This reduces the strain on those who have difficulty with fine motor control, making text input more accessible. It promotes independence by enabling users to interact with their devices without the need for precise taps or swipes. This feature aligns with Apple’s commitment to making its devices more inclusive and adaptable to a range of abilities. Hover typing makes it easier for everyone to use iPhones and iPads more comfortably.

3. Increasing Typing Speed

By eliminating the need for direct contact with the screen, hover typing can increase your typing speed. Since the device anticipates key selections based on proximity, your input becomes quicker and more responsive. This feature is particularly helpful for fast typers who want to maximize their efficiency without sacrificing accuracy. Hover typing allows you to glide over the keyboard more seamlessly, improving the flow of your text. The result is a smoother and faster typing experience, making it perfect for those who rely heavily on their device for communication or work. Speeding up your typing can boost productivity, especially in time-sensitive tasks.

4. Reducing Finger Fatigue

Hover typing reduces finger fatigue during extended typing sessions by minimizing the amount of physical pressure you need to apply to the screen. With traditional typing, prolonged tapping can cause discomfort or fatigue, especially if you’re composing long messages or working on documents. Hover typing requires less effort, offering a more comfortable experience over time. It’s an ideal solution for users who spend significant amounts of time typing on their devices. The reduced strain on your fingers and hands can help you type for longer periods without discomfort. This feature enhances comfort and allows you to be more productive without physical limitations.

5. Offering a Smoother Experience for Stylus Users

Hover typing works exceptionally well for those who use a stylus with their iPhone or iPad. The feature makes it easier to type or navigate the keyboard without needing to apply pressure with the stylus tip. This added functionality is ideal for users who prefer a stylus for precision or artistic purposes but still need to type frequently. Hover typing ensures that stylus-based input is seamless, providing an even smoother experience. The feature makes the interaction between the stylus and the on-screen keyboard more intuitive and effortless. It elevates the overall stylus usage, making it feel more natural for typing as well as drawing or note-taking.
