How to Turn Off Read Receipts in WhatsApp

Want to read a WhatsApp message but don’t want to feel pressured to reply immediately? Thankfully WhatsApp makes it easy to turn off read receipts on WhatsApp so you can read messages without the sender knowing. The only catch is that you can only turn off read receipts for personal WhatsApp chats, and you can’t turn off read receipts in group chats.

Steps to Turn Off Read Receipts in WhatsApp

  1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android device. You’ll land on your WhatsApp chats list.
  2. Tap “Settings” in the menu along the bottom of this screen. The Settings screen is displayed.

  1. Tap “Privacy” in this menu. The Privacy screen is shown.

  1. Scroll down until you see Read Receipts, and then toggle “Read Receipts” off. Going forward read receipts will be turned off for you on WhatsApp in personal conversations, and no one in a personal chat will be able to see whether you’ve read a message they sent, and you won’t be able to see if they read a message you sent. And again, this does not turn off read receipts in a WhatsApp group chat. As of the making of this video WhatsApp doesn’t make it possible to turn off read receipts in group chats.
