Reasons You May Not Want Your TV to Turn On Automatically When You Turn On Your PS5
1. Energy Consumption
People may wish to minimize the electricity they use. This concern is both financial and environmental. Turning on the TV every time the PS5 is activated uses more energy than necessary. Over time, this could lead to increased energy bills. In addition, it contributes to a larger carbon footprint. The amount of energy wasted may seem insignificant day-to-day. However, it adds up over months and years. By choosing to manually control when their TV turns on, individuals can consume energy more efficiently.
2. Disturbances
Sometimes the PS5 gets turned on for reasons other than gaming or watching content. It might be to install updates, download games, or perform maintenance tasks. If the TV turns on automatically during these instances, it could cause a disturbance. The TV’s light and sound could be bothersome, especially during quiet hours. This could disrupt others in shared living spaces or during late-night hours when everyone else is asleep.
3. Wear and Tear
Like all electronics, TVs have a finite lifespan. Each cycle of turning on and off puts a strain on the TV’s internal components. Regularly powering up the TV each time the PS5 is switched on may accelerate the wear and tear process. Over time, this could lead to performance degradation or the need for more frequent repairs. By preventing automatic activation, users can potentially extend the lifespan of their TV.
4. Multitasking
In the modern era, consoles like the PS5 are versatile machines. They can play music or podcasts, which do not require a TV screen. During such uses, having the TV turn on automatically is unnecessary. The added noise and light from the TV could be distracting. It’s especially bothersome if other activities are happening in the room. Users may prefer to keep their TV off for these multitasking moments.
5. Control Over Viewing
Users sometimes use their PS5 for non-gaming activities like internet browsing or using other apps. They might want to start these activities on the PS5 first, and only turn on the TV when they’re ready to view. It gives them control over their viewing experience. They can make sure everything is set up on the PS5 before engaging the TV. This way, they don’t waste TV power on loading screens or settings adjustments.
6. Save Screen Life
TVs with technologies like OLED or QLED have screens with finite lifespans. Unnecessary activation of these screens shortens their longevity. When the TV turns on every time the PS5 does, it can contribute to the degradation of the screen over time. This could lead to diminished picture quality, or even require a screen replacement. By keeping the TV off when not needed, users can help prolong the life of their TV screen.
7. Inconvenience
If the user has a home theater system or an AV receiver, the TV switching on automatically can cause inconveniences. When the TV turns on, it may cause the system to switch inputs automatically. This could interrupt other media being played on the system. Also, it’s frustrating to manually change the input back each time. The user could avoid this hassle by keeping the TV from turning on with the PS5.
8. Multiple Screen Setup
Some users have multiple screens, like a gaming monitor and a TV. They may prefer the monitor for gaming due to its lower input lag and higher refresh rates. If the TV turns on automatically with the PS5, it’s an unnecessary use of energy. Moreover, the user might find it distracting to have an unused TV screen on. In these cases, it makes sense to prevent the TV from activating alongside the PS5.
9. Reduced Noise
Some TVs produce startup sounds or music. This can be disruptive if someone turns on their PS5 without needing the TV. Especially in quiet environments, the sudden noise from a TV starting up can be quite jarring. Avoiding this unnecessary noise is another good reason to keep the TV from automatically turning on with the PS5.
10. Habit or Personal Preference
Everyone has unique habits and preferences when it comes to technology. Some people prefer to control each of their devices manually. They like knowing exactly when and why each device is on. They might not appreciate one device triggering another without explicit instruction. The automatic activation of the TV with the PS5 might feel intrusive or unexpected. This can be a compelling reason to keep these devices operating independently.
Reasons You May Want Your PS5 to Turn Off When Your Turn Your TV Off
1. Energy Conservation
Energy consumption is a major concern for many. The PS5, while efficient, consumes electricity even in standby mode. When linked to your TV’s power state, it will shut down, reducing your home’s energy footprint. This not only benefits the environment but also contributes to lower energy bills.
2. Prolonging Console Lifespan
Every electronic device has a finite lifespan. The more a device runs, the quicker it wears out. In the case of a PS5, excessive use can lead to deterioration of its internal components. Having it power down with the TV helps reduce its operational hours, thereby potentially increasing its life expectancy.
3. Avoiding Overheating
Although the PS5 is designed to dissipate heat effectively, prolonged use can increase the risk of overheating. This can lead to internal damage or system instability. By ensuring the PS5 turns off when the TV does, you limit the duration it generates heat, promoting a cooler, safer operating environment.
4. Preventing Unintentional Downloads/Updates
PS5 consoles can automatically download updates or new games in the background. While this feature can be helpful, it may also lead to unintended downloads. By turning off the PS5 with the TV, users limit these background activities, avoiding potential surprises or unwanted network consumption.
5. Minimizing Noise
Every running electronic device emits a certain level of noise. The hum of a PS5 may not be loud, but for some people, silence is golden. Turning off the PS5 along with the TV helps maintain a quiet, serene environment, free from electronic buzzes or whirs.
6. Safety Reasons
While rare, electronic devices can pose certain risks if left running continuously, like potential electrical shorts. In extreme cases, they could even ignite a fire. Automatically turning off your PS5 when not in use lowers these risks, contributing to a safer home environment.
7. Habit or Preference
Many individuals value orderliness and simplicity. They prefer to shut down their electronic devices when not in use. For them, having the PS5 turn off with the TV aligns with their principles, offering a satisfying sense of control and tidiness.
8. Avoid Screen Burn-In
Screen burn-in is a phenomenon where prolonged display of static images can cause permanent damage to screens. It’s less common in modern TVs but can still occur. Turning off your PS5 when your TV is off eliminates the risk of a static image being displayed too long, safeguarding your screen’s quality.
Reasons You May Not Want Your PS5 to Turn Off When Your Turn Your TV Off
1. Downloading Games or Updates
When downloading games or updates, your PS5 needs uninterrupted connectivity. Downloads can take considerable time due to file sizes. An automatic switch-off interrupts this process, leading to possible download restarts. This can be frustrating, especially with slow internet connections or large files. Interruptions may also lead to potential data corruption. Therefore, maintaining the power to your console when your TV is off can be beneficial. It allows the PS5 to complete its downloads without unnecessary complications.
2. Background Processes
Background processes are vital for maintaining your PS5’s performance. These processes include software updates, system diagnostics, and cache clearing. Automatically turning off your PS5 can interrupt these operations, potentially leading to performance issues or system errors. Keeping your PS5 on ensures these processes complete successfully, providing you with an optimal gaming experience. Maintaining power to the PS5 also allows it to perform these tasks outside your gaming time.
3. Streaming or Sharing Content
Sharing or streaming content is a popular activity among PS5 users. You might be broadcasting your gameplay live, or sharing a recorded session with friends. An automatic PS5 shutdown disrupts these activities. In live streaming cases, your audience would be left hanging, creating a negative viewing experience. For content sharing, your PS5 needs continuous operation to transfer files to another device or platform. Therefore, preventing automatic shut-off allows uninterrupted streaming or sharing.
4. Running Applications
Some PS5 users utilize applications like Spotify or Netflix on their consoles. These apps may continue to run even when the user isn’t actively watching the TV. An automatic shutdown not only stops these applications but also may cause app data loss or interruption in music streaming. This provides a strong reason to maintain power to the PS5, ensuring you can seamlessly continue your activities when you return to the TV.
5. Remote Play
Remote Play is a feature that lets you stream games from your PS5 to another device. This could be a smartphone, a PC, or a PS Vita. If your PS5 shuts down automatically with the TV, you won’t be able to use this feature. Having your PS5 remain on guarantees that Remote Play remains available. It ensures a continuous gaming experience, even on different devices, enhancing the flexibility of your gaming habits.
6. Game Progress
Most modern games auto-save your progress. However, some games do not. If you’ve been gaming for hours and your PS5 shuts down with your TV, you could lose all your progress. This can lead to considerable frustration and diminished gaming enjoyment. By ensuring your PS5 doesn’t turn off with your TV, you secure your hard-earned progress and safeguard your gaming achievements.
7. Potential Wear and Tear
The constant powering on and off of electronics can contribute to wear and tear. Over time, this may reduce your PS5’s lifespan. In contrast, keeping your PS5 in rest mode might prolong its functional duration. It helps in minimizing the mechanical stress exerted during the booting process. Ensuring the PS5 doesn’t turn off with the TV could lead to a healthier, longer-lasting console.
8. Convenience
Fast booting can greatly enhance your gaming experience. If your PS5 remains powered when the TV is off, you can quickly resume gaming when you return. Waiting for the PS5 to power up can feel cumbersome, especially when you’re eager to jump back into action. Avoiding automatic shutdowns with the TV ensures your PS5 is always ready for your next gaming session.
9. VR Use
PS5 offers PSVR, a virtual reality experience. With VR, you’re not reliant on the TV for gameplay. If the PS5 shuts down with the TV, your VR session would abruptly end. This can be jarring and disruptive to the immersive VR experience. By keeping your PS5 on even when the TV is off, you can continue your VR adventures without any unwanted disruptions.
