Introduction
In mid-2020 Facebook added the ability for people using the Messenger app on an iPhone, iPad or Android device to share their screen through the app. The Messenger screen sharing feature can be accessed while making a video call. And while the steps to use the feature in each mobile operating system are very similar, there are some differences, so I’ll cover each separately. Examples of all instructions in the steps can be seen in the YouTube video below.
Steps to Share Your Screen Using Facebook Messenger on iPhone or iPad
- Launch the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone or iPad, and then start a video call with one of your Facebook Messenger contacts by tapping the “Video” icon at the top of the conversation window. A new video call will start.
- Tap the screen to bring up the on-screen controls, and then swipe up on the panel of buttons to expand the options. Tap “Share Your Screen.” A Screen Broadcast window appears.
- Tap “Start Broadcast” in the window. A timer will count down from three, and then then a red circle will appear to indicate that you’re sharing your iPhone or iPad screen. Tap outside of the window to close the window. Now you can navigate outside of the Messenger app to anywhere else on your iPhone or iPad, and your screen will be shared on Messenger. You’ll also see the clock in the upper left corner of your screen has a red background, which also indicates your screen is being shared. You can stop sharing your iPhone or iPad screen on Facebook Messenger at any time by tapping the time with the red background at the top of your screen. A window is displayed asking if you want to stop broadcasting your screen. Tap “Stop” to stop sharing your iPhone or iPad screen on Facebook Messenger.

5 Reasons to Share Your Screen Using the Facebook Messenger App for iPhone, iPad or Android
1. Enhanced Communication Clarity
When discussing complex topics via text isn’t sufficient, screen sharing through Facebook Messenger can significantly enhance understanding. Visual aids can clarify intricate details that are hard to explain in words alone. For instance, guiding someone through a new app or explaining a graphical presentation becomes easier when you can show exactly what you mean in real-time. This tool is invaluable for bridging communication gaps, especially when dealing with technical support or detailed project discussions. Additionally, it ensures both parties are literally on the same page, avoiding misinterpretations and speeding up decision-making processes. Thus, screen sharing becomes a critical feature for clear and effective communication.
2. Remote Assistance and Troubleshooting
Offering remote support is a breeze with screen sharing on Facebook Messenger. This feature is perfect for helping friends or family with technological issues without being physically present. By sharing your screen, you can demonstrate how to resolve problems, from adjusting settings to installing software. It’s particularly useful for guiding less tech-savvy users through complex processes. This not only saves time but also reduces frustration for both helper and receiver. Furthermore, it eliminates the need for back-and-forth messaging or calls, streamlining the help process. Screen sharing transforms remote support into a more manageable and immediate solution.
3. Interactive Educational Sessions
Educators and tutors find screen sharing through Facebook Messenger extremely beneficial for conducting interactive learning sessions. It allows them to share educational resources like documents, websites, and software directly with students in real-time. This interaction mimics a classroom environment where teachers can point out details, highlight information, and engage students more effectively than through traditional call or text. It also supports a variety of learning styles, accommodating visual learners particularly well. Moreover, this method fosters a collaborative learning atmosphere, encouraging students to ask questions and interact as they view the shared content. This makes the educational experience more dynamic and accessible from any location.
4. Collaborative Work on Projects
For team projects, screen sharing in Facebook Messenger facilitates real-time collaboration. Team members can jointly review documents, edit presentations, or brainstorm ideas, all while discussing changes live. This simulates a collaborative workspace environment, enhancing productivity and creativity. It’s particularly useful for teams that operate remotely or have members in different locations. The ability to instantly share and visually discuss project components ensures that everyone understands the task and can contribute effectively. It also helps in keeping the team aligned on goals and deadlines, making the collaborative process more efficient and synchronized.
5. Personal Sharing Experiences
Beyond work and education, screen sharing on Facebook Messenger enhances personal interactions by allowing users to share experiences like browsing vacation options, shopping online, or exploring real estate listings together. This makes decision-making a shared journey, enriching relationships and making moments memorable. It brings a new dimension to online hangouts, where friends or family can, for example, watch videos together, share photo albums in real-time, or plan events collaboratively. These shared experiences are invaluable in maintaining strong connections and creating a sense of togetherness, despite physical distances.
