Introduction
With the rollout of iOS 13 in late 2019 Apple is making it possible for iPhone and iPad users to create and send memoji stickers. The stickers in the default sticker pack you can apply to your memoji let you convey a wide range of feelings quickly, and in a fun and personal way. Examples of all instructions in the steps can be seen in the YouTube video below.
Steps to Send Memoji Stickers on iPhone or iPad
- Tap to open an app that supports the use of Apple memoji on your iPhone or iPad. Native Apple apps that do this are the Messages and Mail apps. In this example, I’ll open the Messages app and will open up an existing chat.
- Tap inside of the “iMessage” field like you’re going to enter a new message to bring up the keyboard on the lower part of the screen, and then tap the gray “App Store” icon above the keyboard and to the left of the iMessage field. A row of menu icons appears directly above the keyboard. As an important note, before you can proceed to the next step, you must have created a memoji before you can send memoji stickers. I’ll link to my video in the description that will walk you through creating a memoji.
- Tap the “Stickers” icon in the row of menu options. The Stickers icon features three faces on it. The memoji and animoji stickers options appear in place of the keyboard. Swipe up on the screen if you want the selection of animoji and memoji stickers to take up the full screen. You can tap your different animoji or memoji along the top of the sticker options to see the stickers applied to different animoji or memoji.
- Tap to select the memoji sticker you want to send in this chat. A preview of the memoji sticker you’ll send in the chat appears in the chat thread. Add a comment in the preview field if you want to, and then tap the “Send” button to send your memoji sticker in the chat.
5 Reasons to Send Memoji Stickers on iPhone or iPad
1. Expressing Emotions Vividly
Memoji stickers allow users to express their emotions in a highly personalized and dynamic way. Traditional emojis are static and generic. In contrast, memoji stickers mirror the user’s own appearance and expressions. This makes digital communication feel more personal and engaging. Users can convey subtle emotions like sarcasm, excitement, or sympathy more effectively. For example, a customized memoji with an exaggerated wink can add a playful tone to a message. This personalized approach helps bridge the emotional gap often felt in text-based conversations. As facial expressions are pivotal in understanding emotions, memoji stickers enrich the interaction, making it vibrant and expressive.
2. Enhancing Digital Identity
Memoji stickers serve as an extension of one’s digital identity on platforms like iMessage. By customizing features such as skin tone, hairstyle, and accessories, users create a digital avatar that resembles them closely. This customization promotes a sense of individuality in the digital space where uniformity often prevails. It allows people to stand out in group chats or social media. Young users find this particularly appealing as it lets them showcase their evolving styles and preferences. Furthermore, updating a memoji to reflect changes like a new haircut or glasses keeps social interactions fresh and exciting. Thus, memoji stickers are more than fun; they are a form of self-expression.
3. Fostering Creativity and Fun
Using memoji stickers is a fun and creative activity. The process of designing a memoji involves choosing from a wide range of customizable features. Users enjoy experimenting with different looks, which can be humorous or whimsical. It’s common to create multiple memoji for different moods or occasions, such as one with party hats for celebrations or another with sunglasses for vacations. This playful aspect encourages users to be creative with their communications. Sending these stickers can make everyday conversations more lively and entertaining. For children and adults alike, this creative outlet adds a layer of enjoyment to the routine of digital messaging.
4. Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion
Apple’s memoji stickers are designed to be inclusive, offering a wide array of customization options that cater to diverse global users. These options include various skin tones, cultural attire, and religious symbols. Such features enable individuals from different backgrounds to see themselves represented in their digital communications. Representation matters, especially in global conversations, as it fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance. By using memoji that reflect their unique identity, users can celebrate their heritage and promote cultural understanding among their peers. This inclusivity not only enriches the user experience but also enhances social interactions by highlighting diversity.
5. Improving Accessibility in Communication
Memoji stickers can also play a role in making communication more accessible. For individuals who find it challenging to convey their thoughts through text alone, such as those with certain disabilities or language barriers, memoji offer a visual method of expression. Visual cues are often easier to understand and can convey a message quickly and effectively. For example, a thumbs-up memoji can universally signal approval or agreement without the need for text. This can be particularly useful in fast-paced or multilingual settings where quick, clear communication is essential. Hence, memoji stickers help break down barriers in communication, making it more inclusive and efficient.
