With the latest updates in iOS and iPadOS, Apple is letting you replace the flashlight and camera buttons at the bottom of your iPhone or iPad lock screen. Taking advantage of this lets you access your favorite features even faster. You can replace those buttons with a favorite shortcut, a toggle for dark mode, a quick way to open Instagram, your hotspot, or a number of other options. The only catch is that this requires that you’re using an iPhone running at least iOS 18 or an iPad running at least iPadOS 18.

Steps to Replace the Flashlight and Camera Buttons on iPhone or iPad Lock Screen
- Open the “Settings” app on your iPhone or iPad home screen, and then tap “Wallpaper” in this menu. The Wallpaper menu opens.
- Find your current wallpaper display, and then tap “Customize.” A window pops up asking if you want to customize your current wallpaper or add a new wallpaper.
- Tap “Customize Current Wallpaper.” A customizable version of your current wallpaper lock screen will be displayed.
- Find the camera and flashlight icons at the bottom of the screen. Tap the “Minus” sign next to the icon you want to remove. In this example, I’ll tap the minus sign next to the flashlight icon. The flashlight icon will be removed.
- Now, tap the “Plus” sign where the icon you removed used to be. A window opens with icons you can put in that slot.
- Tap the icon you want to put in that slot on your iPhone or iPad lock screen. In this example, I’ll tap the “Calculator” icon. That window will close, and you’ll return to the wallpaper customization screen, where you’ll see your new icon added. Tap “Done” to save your changes.
Going forward, whenever you access your device’s lock screen, you’ll see your newly added icon in place of the camera or flashlight button that you removed.
5 Reasons to Replace the Flashlight and Camera Buttons on iPhone or iPad Lock Screen
1. Customizing for Frequently Used Apps
Replacing the flashlight and camera icons on your iPhone or iPad lock screen allows you to customize it with apps you use more frequently. For example, if you regularly use a different app, such as Notes or a weather app, swapping out the default icons helps streamline your access. Customizing the lock screen to suit your habits improves convenience, making your most-used features just a tap away. This personalization speeds up everyday tasks and tailors your device to how you prefer to interact with it. It’s a simple tweak that can save time throughout the day. By putting essential apps right at your fingertips, you create a lock screen experience that’s truly yours.
2. Preventing Accidental Camera and Flashlight Activation
Swapping out the camera and flashlight icons can prevent accidental activation. Many users find themselves unintentionally turning on the flashlight or launching the camera when handling their devices. By replacing these icons with less sensitive shortcuts, you reduce the chances of unnecessary battery drain or unintended app launches. This tweak enhances the usability of your device, especially if you frequently handle it without needing quick access to the camera or flashlight. Eliminating these accidental activations extends your device’s battery life and reduces frustration. It’s a practical adjustment for improving your overall user experience.
3. Enhancing Productivity
Replacing the default icons with productivity apps, such as Calendar, Reminders, or Email, enhances your efficiency. By placing these apps directly on your lock screen, you streamline your workflow and gain quick access to essential tools. This change minimizes the steps required to check your schedule, create to-do lists, or manage your inbox. It’s especially helpful for those who rely heavily on their devices for work or organization. Customizing the lock screen for productivity transforms your device into a more powerful tool for managing daily tasks. It saves time and helps you stay organized throughout the day.
4. Prioritizing Security Features
Some users prefer to replace the camera and flashlight icons with shortcuts to security-related apps, such as a home security camera feed or a two-factor authentication app. This adjustment prioritizes security by ensuring quick access to important apps in emergencies or high-priority situations. Having these security tools readily available on the lock screen can make a significant difference in urgent scenarios. You’ll be able to respond faster and more efficiently without having to unlock your device and search for the app. Prioritizing security on your lock screen adds peace of mind and reinforces your safety measures.
5. Creating a More Personalized User Experience
Customizing the lock screen by replacing the default icons allows for a more personalized user experience. Swapping out the camera and flashlight for apps or shortcuts that reflect your lifestyle, such as a music player or fitness tracker, makes the device feel more tailored to you. Personalization adds a level of comfort and enjoyment when using your device, making it feel like an extension of your personality and preferences. Whether you want quick access to entertainment, fitness, or other categories, customizing the lock screen enhances your interaction with your iPhone or iPad. It reflects your individual usage patterns and brings added satisfaction to your daily routine.
