How to Lock and Require Face ID or Touch ID to Open an App on Your iPhone or iPad

If you have apps on your iPhone or iPad that contain sensitive information (like photos, messages, or financial data) you might want an extra layer of security to protect your privacy. Thankfully, Apple makes it easy to lock an app on your iPhone or iPad, and require that you authenticate with either Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open a locked app. The only requirement to lock an app on your iPhone or iPad is that you’re using an iPhone running at least iOS 18 or an iPad running at least iPadOS 18.

5 Reasons to Lock and Require Face ID or Touch ID to Open an App on Your iPhone or iPad

1. Protecting Sensitive Personal Information

Locking apps with Face ID or Touch ID is a smart way to protect sensitive personal information stored on your iPhone or iPad. Apps like banking, health, and password managers contain data you wouldn’t want others to access. By requiring biometric authentication, you ensure that only you can open these apps, adding an extra layer of security beyond your device’s passcode. This means that even if someone else has your device, they can’t peek into your confidential information. It’s an effective method to safeguard against identity theft or financial fraud. Biometric locks are quick and convenient, so you don’t sacrifice usability for security. Keeping your personal data secure has never been easier with this feature.

2. Preventing Unauthorized Access When Sharing Your Device

Sometimes you might hand over your iPhone or iPad to a friend or family member. Locking specific apps with Face ID or Touch ID helps prevent unauthorized access during these moments. For instance, you might let your child play a game but don’t want them accessing your work emails or social media accounts. By locking those apps, you maintain control over what others can see or do on your device. This feature is particularly useful for parents who want to manage their children’s screen time without constant supervision. It gives you peace of mind knowing that your personal apps remain private, even when your device is in someone else’s hands. Sharing your device becomes less risky and more convenient.

3. Adding Extra Security in Case of Loss or Theft

If your iPhone or iPad gets lost or stolen, locking apps with Face ID or Touch ID adds an extra layer of protection. While your device might have a passcode, determined individuals could find ways to bypass it. By locking individual apps, you make it significantly harder for anyone to access your sensitive information. This could include apps with personal photos, financial data, or private messages. Biometric locks are unique to you, making unauthorized access nearly impossible. Taking this precaution helps protect your identity and personal data from potential misuse. It’s a proactive step that can save you from significant stress and complications down the line.

4. Maintaining Privacy Over Personal Conversations

Keeping your personal conversations private is important, and locking messaging apps with Face ID or Touch ID helps achieve that. Whether it’s text messages, emails, or social media chats, you might not want others to read them. By securing these apps, you ensure that your private communications stay confidential. This is especially useful in situations where someone else might have brief access to your device. It prevents accidental snooping and protects sensitive discussions. Maintaining control over your personal conversations adds to your overall sense of privacy. It’s a simple way to keep your interactions secure and personal.

5. Controlling Access to Apps That Could Cause Unintended Actions

Some apps on your device could lead to unintended actions if misused, such as shopping apps or settings that control smart home devices. Locking these apps with Face ID or Touch ID prevents unauthorized changes or purchases. For example, you wouldn’t want someone accidentally ordering items or changing important settings. By requiring biometric authentication, you ensure that only you can make those changes. This adds a layer of protection against accidental or unauthorized usage. It’s particularly helpful for parents who want to prevent their children from accessing certain functionalities. Controlling access to these apps helps you manage your device more effectively and securely.
