Steps to Hide Songs on Spotify

  1. Open the playlist or album that contains the song you want to hide, and then find that song. Again, you can only hide songs on Spotify in the Spotify mobile app.
  2. Tap the ellipses next to that song. A menu opens.

  1. Tap “Hide Song” in that menu. The menu will close and you’ll see that song is grayed out in the song list. You’ll also see a note appear briefly at the bottom of the screen letting you know that this song has been hidden. Going forward that song will no longer be available to play. If you play a Spotify playlist or album that contains that song, that specific song will be skipped.

Steps to Unhide Songs on Spotify

  1. Navigate to the Spotify mobile app home screen, and then tap “Settings.” The Settings menu is displayed.

  1. Tap “Playback” in this list. The Playback screen is shown.

  1. Scroll down this screen and find Hide Unplayable Songs, and then tap to toggle off “Hide Unplayable Songs.” This will ensure you can see Spotify songs you’ve hidden grayed out in the playlist or album song list they appear in.

  1. Navigate back to the album that contains the Spotify song you want to unhide, and then find the song you want to unhide. Again, you’ll see that song is grayed out.
  2. Tap the ellipses next to the Spotify song you want to unhide. A menu opens.

  1. Tap “Hidden.” That song will be unhidden. You’ll return to the Spotify playlist where you’ll see that specific song is no longer grayed out.

Reasons to Hide Songs on Spotify

1. Personal Preference

Everyone has their own musical tastes, and not every song resonates with every listener. Personal preference plays a significant role in why a Spotify user might choose to hide a particular song. It’s akin to skipping a track on a CD or changing a radio station. Hiding a song on Spotify allows the listener to tailor their experience, ensuring they only hear the tracks they truly enjoy. Over time, these choices help create a more personalized listening journey.

2. Sensitive Content

Music has the power to evoke strong emotions and memories. For some, certain songs can bring back painful or traumatic experiences. By hiding these tracks on Spotify, listeners can safeguard their emotional well-being. Music is often a source of comfort, and removing potential triggers can ensure it remains a positive experience.

3. Surprises

Anticipation and surprise add excitement to life. When planning events, like surprise parties, people often curate specific playlists. If they want to keep the song choices a secret, hiding them becomes crucial. It ensures that the element of surprise isn’t accidentally ruined by a curious friend or family member who might glimpse their recent plays.

4. Parental Control

Music can cover a vast range of topics, and not all are suitable for younger audiences. Parents or guardians who share their Spotify accounts with children may choose to hide songs with explicit content or mature themes. This act ensures a safer listening environment, offering peace of mind that the youth are only exposed to age-appropriate tracks.

5. Embarrassment

Everyone has their guilty pleasure songs — tracks they love but might be hesitant to admit. Whether it’s a cheesy 90s hit or a viral novelty song, hiding it on Spotify can save face. It keeps these personal favorites private, letting listeners enjoy without the fear of potential teasing or playful judgment.

6. Repetitiveness

Hearing the same song repeatedly can be tiresome. Some songs, although liked initially, can become annoying if overplayed. Hiding such tracks on Spotify can break the monotony, ensuring a fresh and diverse listening experience each time. It gives the user control, allowing them to steer their musical journey in the direction they desire.

7. To Improve Recommendations

Spotify’s algorithms generate recommendations based on listening habits. If a user feels that certain songs are skewing their suggestions, hiding those tracks on Spotify can refine the algorithm’s output. This action ensures the user gets recommendations more in line with their actual preferences, enhancing their overall Spotify experience.

8. Shared Account

Using a shared Spotify account can be a balancing act. To maintain harmony, users might hide songs they know their account partner dislikes on Spotify. This consideration ensures both parties enjoy their shared musical space, reducing potential conflicts over song choices.

9. Avoiding Spoilers

For avid music enthusiasts, the release of a new album is an event. Some prefer to experience it start to finish without prior exposure to singles. Hiding these early-release tracks on Spotify ensures the full album remains a fresh, unspoiled experience.

10. Professional Reasons

Music professionals, such as DJs or event planners, often use Spotify in their work settings. They might hide songs deemed unsuitable for their audience. This ensures a consistent professional image, eliminating any risk of playing something inappropriate or off-brand.

11. Maintaining a Mood

When curating playlists for specific moods, consistency is key. If a lively track disrupts a chill playlist, it can jar the listener. By hiding non-conforming tracks, users ensure a consistent vibe, allowing the intended mood to shine through.
