Introduction
By default, the thumbs up emoji sits next to where you type messages in your Facebook Messenger conversation threads. Thankfully, if there’s another emoji you’d rather have in that place for easy access, Facebook makes it possible to change that emoji. The only caveat is that you have to change the default thumbs up emoji in each individual conversation, and you can’t change it universally. In this video I’ll show you how to change the default like emoji in both the Facebook Messenger app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, and also the Messenger.com website.

Steps to Change Thumbs Up on Facebook Messenger App
- Launch the Facebook Messenger app, and then tap to open the conversation thread where you want to change the like emoji button to something else.
- Tap the name at the top of the conversation thread. An information screen is displayed.
- Tap “Emoji” in the menu. An emoji window appears.
- Tap to select the emoji you want to show in place of the thumbs up icon in this specific conversation thread. The window will close and you’ll return to the information screen for this conversation thread where you’ll see the emoji you chose next to Emoji. Now when you return to that conversation thread you’ll see the emoji you selected in place of the thumbs up button.
Steps to Change Thumbs Up on Facebook Messenger on Messenger.com
- Open a web browser and navigate to Messenger.com, then open the conversation thread where you want to change the thumbs up emoji to something else.
- Tap the “i” icon that appears along the top of the conversation window. A menu is displayed on the right side of the screen.
- Click “Change Emoji.” A window opens where you can pick a new emoji for this specific Facebook Messenger conversation.
- Choose your new default emoji. The window will close and you’ll return to the information screen for this conversation thread where you’ll see the emoji you chose next to Emoji. Now in that conversation thread you’ll see the emoji you selected in place of the thumbs up button.
