Introduction
Maybe someone got into your Netflix account and changed your language as a joke. Or maybe you’re learning another language and want to change the language of the text in the Netflix interface as a way to help you learn. Regardless your reason, changing the language in your Netflix interface can be done with a few clicks in your Netflix account settings. However, your Netflix account settings can only be accessed through the Netflix website. The good news is that after you change your Netflix language here, that change will be reflected in the Netflix app on any platforms where you use it — such as Roku, Windows, Xbox, iOS, Android, and more. Examples of all instructions in the steps can be seen in the YouTube video below.
Steps to Change Netflix Language
- Navigate to Netflix.com in a web browser and log in to your Netflix account. You’ll arrive at your Netflix home screen.
- Click the profile icon in the upper right corner of the screen to open a drop-down menu. Click “Account” in the drop-down menu. Your Netflix Account screen appears.
- Scroll down to the My Profile section, and then click “Language” in the My Profile section. The Language screen appears.
- Click to select the language you want to be used in the Netflix interface across the various platforms you use Netflix on. In this example, I’ll change my Netflix language to Spanish. Click “Save” after selecting your new Netflix language. You’ll be returned to your Netflix Account screen, where you’ll see a note across the top of the screen that your Netflix language has been changed. Additionally, all of the text will now be displayed in your new language.
Now, when you launch Netflix on any of the platforms you use it on, the text on the interface will be in your new language.
5 Reasons to Change the Netflix Language
1. Personal Preference and Comfort
For many, the primary drive to change language settings on Netflix is simple comfort. Watching shows and movies in one’s native language can enhance understanding and enjoyment. This is particularly true for non-native English speakers or those who find certain accents or dialects challenging. Moreover, children and elderly viewers often find native language content more accessible. This setting ensures that descriptions, menus, and subtitles all align with the viewer’s preferred language, making the browsing experience seamless and enjoyable.
2. Language Learning
Netflix is an unexpected but effective tool for language learners. Switching the audio and subtitles to a language you’re learning can immerse you in it daily. This method is supported by language experts who advocate for immersive learning environments where continual exposure reinforces language skills. Watching familiar shows in a new language helps learners decipher spoken nuances and idiomatic expressions. Additionally, seeing the language in various contexts deepens understanding and retention. It’s a low-pressure, entertaining way to supplement formal language studies.
3. Accessibility for Non-Native Speakers
In households or settings with diverse linguistic backgrounds, changing the language setting ensures inclusivity. For instance, if you have guests or family members who speak different languages, adjusting Netflix’s language lets everyone enjoy the content. This is especially useful in multicultural families where members may prefer different languages. Ensuring everyone can understand the content promotes shared entertainment experiences, enhancing family bonding over favorite shows or movies.
4. Expanding Cultural Horizons
Exploring foreign films and series in their original language can broaden cultural understanding and appreciation. Many cinephiles and casual viewers alike prefer watching content in its original language to capture the authentic emotion and cultural nuances that dubbing might miss. Changing the language setting allows access to a broader spectrum of international content, offering insights into different storytelling styles, humor, and historical contexts unique to each culture.
5. Overcoming Geographical Restrictions
Occasionally, Netflix defaults to the regional language based on the viewer’s location, which might not always align with the viewer’s preference. For expatriates or travelers, this can be an issue if the local language isn’t one they speak fluently. Changing the language setting helps overcome this barrier, allowing users to enjoy their favorite content in a language they fully understand. This adjustment is particularly valuable in regions with multiple official languages or for users who move between countries.
