Steps to Turn Off Instagram Read Receipts
- Open the Instagram app on your mobile device, and then tap your profile icon in the menu along the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the “Menu” icon at the top of the screen. The Settings and Activity screen opens.
- Scroll down to the How Others Can Interact With You section, and then tap “Messages and Story Replies.” The associated screen is displayed.
- Navigate to the Who Can See You’re Online section, and then tap “Show Read Receipts.” The Show Read Receipts screen is displayed.

5 Reasons to Turn Off Instagram Read Receipts
1. Maintaining Privacy and Control
Turning off Instagram read receipts allows you to maintain your privacy and control over your interactions. Without read receipts, you can view messages without the sender knowing, giving you the freedom to respond on your own terms. This is especially useful if you need time to think about your reply or if you’re not ready to engage in a conversation. Keep your interactions private and under your control by disabling read receipts.
2. Reducing Social Pressure
Disabling read receipts on Instagram helps reduce the social pressure to respond immediately after reading a message. When others know you’ve seen their message, there’s often an expectation of a quick reply, which can be stressful. By turning off read receipts, you relieve yourself of this pressure, allowing you to respond when you’re ready. Manage your communication at your own pace without the added stress of instant expectations.
3. Avoiding Misunderstandings
By turning off read receipts, you can avoid potential misunderstandings that arise when a message is read but not immediately responded to. When the sender sees that you’ve read their message but haven’t replied, they might assume you’re ignoring them, leading to unnecessary tension. Disabling this feature helps prevent these situations, ensuring that your communication remains clear and free of assumptions. Maintain smooth and misunderstanding-free interactions by keeping read receipts off.
4. Focusing on Important Tasks
Without the distraction of read receipts, you can focus on important tasks without feeling obligated to respond to messages right away. This is particularly beneficial during work hours or when you’re engaged in activities that require your full attention. By turning off read receipts, you prioritize your responsibilities while still being able to check messages at your convenience. Stay productive by minimizing interruptions from social media expectations.
5. Encouraging Thoughtful Responses
Turning off Instagram read receipts encourages you to take your time crafting thoughtful responses instead of feeling rushed to reply immediately. When there’s no pressure to respond the moment a message is read, you can consider your reply more carefully, leading to more meaningful conversations. This approach fosters better communication and helps you engage more deeply with others. Enhance the quality of your interactions by allowing yourself the time to respond thoughtfully.
